Lutherie Wood for Guitars: Spruce from Hattori Shoten, the Timber that Shapes the Sound of the World

Acoustic Guitar Soundboard / Top Wood

At Madera Style, we are constantly anticipating and responding to the needs of the lutherie market.

Madera Style Spruce Lutherie Wood

Madera Style Spruce Lutherie Wood (Spruce Logs)

It begins with the rare step of selecting only the highest-grade logs.

Among Alaskan spruce logs, the highest classification grade is “E-sort.”
Even in a lot of 500 logs, fewer than one-fifth will meet this standard.

At Madera Style, we secure logs exclusively from rare E-sort stock.
From within those E-sort logs, we further perform rigorous “Premium Selection (Tokusen-boku)” before purchase.
The spruce logs we procure represent only about one in a hundred—exceptionally select E-sort material.
Even with the finest E-sort, not all of it can be utilized as Lutherie Wood (Instrument-grade tonewood).

We rigorously select, mill, and process only those sections from each individual log that satisfy the demanding criteria for guitar soundboards—straightness of grain, density of latewood (winter grain), and the acoustic character revealed at the end grain—and deliver them as precision lutherie wood.

We read the inherent characteristics of each piece of wood and mill it while determining the acoustically optimal grain orientation and direction.
"Log quality × Technical precision × Expert selection"
Only when these three factors converge does Madera Style spruce lutherie wood come into being.

Madera Style and Hattori Shoten

Madera Style is a brand established as a subsidiary of Hattori Shoten Co., Ltd., dedicated to creating a new culture of lutherie wood.

Hattori Shoten, a timber specialist with a century of history, and its Madera Style division carry forward that tradition with a clear mission: to rediscover the value of wood in the 21st century and transform it into new, advanced forms.

We are a company that brings the intrinsic fascination and depth of wood to society through a completely different approach from that of traditional lumber dealers—manufacturing and selling high-grade DIY materials, developing wood-based lifestyle goods, and creating the registered trademark “Souzou Zakka (Creative Woodcraft Goods).”

Stepping beyond the world where “what is common sense to lumber dealers is nonsense to the wider world,” we give wood new meaning and new value.
This is the very reason Madera Style exists.

About Hattori Shoten Co., Ltd.

Our pride as a materials manufacturer, embodied in every piece of wood.

An outline of Hattori Shoten Co., Ltd.is available on our official website, but here we would like to speak about our guiding purpose.

There are those who say that Japan’s national strength has declined, and that we can no longer create products that astonish the world. Yet even today, in cutting-edge fields such as semiconductors that drive the global economy, it is Japan’s exceptional materials manufacturers that provide the foundation. Hattori Shoten (Madera Style) likewise aspires, in the domain of wood, to stand as a key materials manufacturer that supports industry at its very core.

Since 2000, our company has been among the earliest to share information through our website. Some have kindly praised us for our foresight, but what we value above all is the “Hattori conviction” that will mark its 100th anniversary in 2028.

Our vision is extremely straightforward: to be professionals in timber, trusted by the market. We are convinced that the only path to earning that trust is to persistently and rigorously communicate the intrinsic value of solid wood.

Within this spruce Lutherie Wood (instrument-grade tonewood) project, we are by no means a so‑called “dedicated instrument manufacturer.” Yet we have worked continuously with spruce for over fifty years. Drawing on the full extent of that accumulated expertise, we now present—at precisely the right moment—Hattori Shoten (Madera Style)’s original spruce Lutherie Wood for guitar construction, supplied in Planed Finish and ready for precision processing.
