Hattori Shoten was founded in 1928 and has worked with spruce for over 50 years. We source Alaskan Sitka spruce by making a further selection from high-grade E-sort logs. Even in a quality log, not every part is suitable for instrument making. We examine grain alignment, latewood density and the condition of the end grain, then identify the sections to saw and machine. Drawing on this experience as timber specialists, Madera Style supplies spruce for making instrument soundboards and bracing.
We make a further selection from E-sort logs, the highest classification of Alaskan spruce logs. We assess grain straightness, latewood density and end-grain condition—qualities required for stringed instrument tops—to select the sections for sawing.
Skilled craftspeople machine each product to its specified dimensions and give the surface a planed finish. For two-piece sets, we match the grain and colour before inspection.
